Americorps VISTA

We are HIRING our second Americorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) for the 2020-21 term! Americorps (like the Peace Corps) is a volunteer service program that places passionate individuals in positions where they can make the greatest impact. It’s an opportunity to devote one year of your time to learning new skills, creating valuable connections, and giving back to the community. This position will provide experience in environmental education and communication at the local level, focusing on watershed health in the Tennessee Valley Watershed. Becoming an Americorps VISTA comes with its own perks, including preferred Federal hiring, an education or cash award, and a monthly living allowance, as well as paid professional development opportunities around the county. Primary Responsibilities

∙ Evaluate local watershed needs and create a visual assessment guide to action projects

∙ Train volunteers and create training and action guide for volunteer teams

∙ Initiate action projects in watersheds, particularly focused on abandoned mine lands

∙ Build organizational capacity through trainings, volunteer management, and community outreach to garner both financial and volunteer support

∙ Increase organizational awareness through corporate outreach and collaborations with the Young Professionals Board, as well as tabling and events 

∙ Research and apply for local grants and other fundraising opportunities

∙ Improve communications and awareness through social media, blogs, and videos

Qualifications

∙ At least 18 years of age

∙ College degree (does NOT have to be in an environmental field) 

∙ Experience with environmental education or communication is preferred

∙ Knowledge of watershed health and natural history is a plus

∙ Willingness to learn and work within a small team
